WHY NOW?
The healthcare system is under pressure, and radical changes are needed for it to remain sustainable, with healthcare spend soon going to outstrip GDP in Australia.
There are significant systemic issues. An aging population and the rising incidence of chronic conditions are driving growth in demand. Outdated and fragmented funding models are creating waste across the healthcare system. Outmoded care models have focussed on cure over prevention and system-centred rather than patient-centred care. Overall service delivery has not kept pace with rapid changes in technology and consumer behaviour.
In aged and disability care, there have been reforms in funding and guidelines that are driving providers to be more customer centred and empowering participants in these schemes to have more choice and control. For many care, residence and service providers, this is new or unknown territory. There is much work required to deliver in this way.
Strategic design and transformation of services, funding and outcomes will be key to sustainable delivery in the future. This will be essential as organisations shift towards more patient-centric and value-based care models, manage demand growth, as well as develop new, at scale, products and services based on emerging science and technologies.
There is no magic bullet solution to address this. Change at this scale will need to be well managed, but will ultimately lead to less waste and better value for all, by design.
